History—A Literature Approach

I count this book as being responsible for leading my children and me into a passion for American History in our homeschool! This Christian guidebook outlines lessons based on excellent literature or "living" books from the Vikings to the Civil War. What a great way to learn—through true stories! Daily lesson plans incorporate the "Principle Approach" at an easily understood level, assigning parent read-aloud pages in the literature books, plus providing activities such as poetry, geography, character studies, biblical principles, and much more! (There is some busy work, such as coloring in pictures. I replaced this with simple writing and creative art projects related to the subject.) The program can be completed in either one or two years. Spiral-bound guidebook has black-and-white illustrations. A delightful way to learn history for both parent and child!

America's Providential History

Studying American history has brought me such increased witness of God's hand in our nation's history! He truly guided and directed the events of America's founding. This excellent volume is unique in its content and in its aim—to show how God has led and guided this nation. I have discovered information in this book that I've never seen elsewhere. Did you know that when George Washington was sworn into office he leaned over and kissed the Bible?! Did you know that the starving Continental Army was unexpectedly fed a miraculous supply of fish? Using pitchforks and shovels, the men plunged into the freezing water to throw thousands of shad up onto the snowy banks of the Schuylkill River, providing plenty of food for the army. Each inspiring page details God's workings, from the inception of liberty, through the Pilgrim period, the Revolution, and the Civil War. Ends with a call for Americans to turn back to God. Paperback, 294 pages, black-and white-drawings throughout.

A History of US Series

Who doesn't love a good story? These unique books will make a history-lover out of you and your children! I read them just for fun. Author Joy Hakim was distressed when her 7th grade daughter thought public school history was dull, and she set out to make it interesting for her. This incredible award-winning series is the result! Masterful storyteller, Joy, weaves the exciting adventures that make up the history of our nation so that they read like a novel. You won't find these unique stories and photos elsewhere. I can't imagine a college course containing anything more.

Teaching Guide will help you lead your child through discussions, projects and activities to help them synthesize what they have learned. Study guides/tests are included in the Teaching Guide. I initially thought these books were too much of an investment for history, but once I started reading, I was hooked. They are definitely worth the money. (Not written from a Christian perspective, so you will find some "cave man" type info in the first book, and bits of Woman's Lib throughout.) Paperback books, color photos, approximately 200 pages each, for ages 11 to adult. Riveting reading — your children are going to love American History! 3rd Edition.
