view | The Last 500 Years This volume presents recent history through color illustrations, photographs, maps and more to create a visual presentation of life in modern times, from 1500 to the present day. Brief text gives most important details for a good overview of each topic. The feature I like best is that it presents history by topic or location rather than chronologically, making it so much easier to understand and remember. (Note: The Last 500 Years is also included in the Usborne Encyclopedia of the World, item #1939). For ages 10 years to adult. Hardbound, 96 pages.

view | Usborne Encyclopedia of World History I have studied the books made by the publishers Kingfisher, DK, Time Life, and several other publishers to find the very best history encyclopedia, and, in my view, this beats all! This colorful volume presents the big picture of life on planet earth up to the present day. It is actually four independent volumes bound together: Prehistoric World, Ancient World, Medieval World and The Last 500 Years. Excellent color illustrations, photographs, maps and information create a visual feast. The feature I like best is that it divides history according to civilization geographically (rather than jumping from nation to nation chronologically), making it so much easier to follow and remember. Another incredible feature is that it is internet-linked! You can visit age-appropriate internet sites from reputable universities and museums throughout the world and get up-to-date information and exciting activities such as printing out your name in hieroglyphics or actually listening to a famous speech online. Usborne keeps all links up to date. Hardcover, 415 pages, for ages 10 to adult. New revised 2010 edition has clear descriptions of historical events, reconstructions of exciting scenes throughout history, fascinating illustrations, over 100 maps and a 12,000-year illustrated time chart.
(Note: Prehistoric World, the first volume in the book, is all about dinosaurs and contains graphic evolution. I begin teaching history with the Ancient World section, prefacing it with the creation story.)

A bonus: instructions are included for teaching United States History in Action, a 60- second spoken summary noting the 36 important people and events in modern history. Say each phrase while doing the hand motions and you'll never forget it. Pretty impressive showoff material! A fun approach to history! view | A Tale of Two Cities Written by Charles Dickens, this brilliantly plotted story includes a twist of fate and the inspiring, noble Christlike sacrifice required to right things. Beginning with the famous words, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," you will get a very vivid taste of life during the French Revolution, and the depravity that overtakes men who have no values. Forgiveness, sacrifice, devotion: I ponder the truths in this book often. You'll never forget the ending: so inspiring! My favorite Dickens' book. Paperback, 304 pages. Ages 6 and up.

And who should the hero and rescuer be? The new French regime embarrassedly cannot discover his identity, but his calling card is a small red flower: the pimpernel. view | Learning with the Movies 10% OffWritten especially for homeschoolers who want to use movies to enrich their studies, this informative book will guide you through each period of history, from Bible times through ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mayans, Vikings, on to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, and right through the centuries into modern history with its multitude of war movies. Other educational or family appropriate movies are included too. I appreciate the author's objections, which she notes next to the movie entry, keeping negative surprises from coming on your screen unawares. She even notes well-known historical movies that she recommends you don't view! A unique and useful book that will make your homeschool much more fun (and educational)!
